In the Words of the Manufacturer
As you would expect from the manufacturer, Callaway do not hold back when describing their own driver. In their words, the Callaway Epic Flash is the
This is a fact, so we cannot dispute their claim and there is more to come as Callaway are keen to point to the number of awards their driver has won and let’s be honest, why wouldn’t you? The few awards I have won in my life, I sure did not keep quiet about.
‘The only driver awarded 20 out of 20 stars in the 2019 Golf Digest Hot List.’
So, here it goes. The Callaway Epic Flash was ‘Awarded Best Driver for Swing Speeds 95 MPH – 105 MPH and For Swing Speeds 94 MPH and Below by the GolfWRX expert panel featuring 13 top-ranked club fitters from around the country.’
In addition to highlighting their awards, Callaway is keen to promote the technology used in creating their driver by saying, ‘The Epic Flash Driver employs a new Flash Face Technology, created by Artificial Intelligence, to help golfers get more ball speed for more distance. That great feeling you get when you make a good swing and crush off the tee? Flash Face makes the ball go faster and farther.’
Judging by the comments above, there seems little to dispute in terms of the very high quality of the Callaway Epic Flash but let this non-artificial, normal golfer take a closer look at the club.
How Does the Club Look?
Here we are taking a look at the standard Callaway Epic Flash Driver and this has a slightly larger head than the Sub Zero Driver. In comparison to the popular Rogue driver series the Epic Flash Driver has a more traditional look to it at address and is more compact overall.
While there isn’t a great deal happening on the top of the head, you will notice flashes of green and gold. The black carbon fibre looks great and there is a white alignment triangle in addition to the word ‘Epic’ printed close to the hosel. Quite why there is the need to remind you that this driver is the ‘Epic’ Flash Driver is unclear. Perhaps it is there as some kind of motivational tool to make you feel ‘Epic’ on the tee.
Nonetheless, the Callaway Epic Flash Driver certainly looks the part including the grip and head cover, which add plenty of green to your golf bag.
How Does the Epic Flash Perform?
The sound when finding the centre of the driver face is good. Other golfers around the course are not going to hear it but it falls right in the middle in terms of volume and pitch. You will know when you have struck the sweet spot and it certainly sounds like the ball is going to travel a long way when using the Callaway Epic Flash Driver.
There is plenty of feedback in terms of both sound and in the hands. You will know exactly where you have struck the ball on the face of the driver, whether you want to or not!
Interestingly, the club face has been designed using artificial intelligence and this is called the Flash Face, hence the name of the driver. It has been designed to offer greater forgiveness across the whole face of the driver and in that respect, it certainly works thanks to the continued use of Callaway’s Jailbreak technology.
T2C, which is the new triaxial carbon fabric, has seen weight moved from the front of the crown and repositioned to create a high MOI. There is a built-in track at the rear of the clubhead which allows a 16g sliding weight to be positioned anywhere. Draws, fades and a straighter ball flight can all be promoted using the sliding weight.
There is no doubt that the Callaway Epic Flash Driver produces a very powerful drive and high ball flight. The club is also forgiving and if you are looking to gain a few extra yards off the tee then this driver cannot be ignored. In the right hands, the Callaway Epic Flash Driver can out-perform both the original Callaway Epic and Rogue models. However, to really get the best out of this driver you are advised to purchase it with a club fitting.
Yes, it will be more expensive but if you want to get the most out of the Callaway Epic Flash Driver it is a must. You would not buy a Ferrari only to leave it in first gear…would you? No. Well the same applies to the Callaway Epic Flash Driver. Get fitted for the best experience, you will not regret it.
Who is Using the Driver?
You do not have to look far from the Callaway website to find out who has been using the Callaway Epic Flash Driver. Phil Mickelson says, ‘The ball speed, distance, sound…it just pushes the boundaries of everything I thought I knew about driver technology.’
Sergio Garcia, Xander Schauffele, Kevin Kisner and Francesco Molinari are just some of the other PGA Tour professionals who have been using the Epic Flash. Callaway’s tour reps have said, ‘players are impressed by the ball speed gains and tighter dispersion that they’re seeing in testing and inside the ropes.’
The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted ‘adjustability’ features in both the pros and cons of the Callaway Epic Flash Driver. No, it is not a mistake. Having a high degree of control over launch angle, shot shape and loft of the club face is great for those who know what they are doing but not so good for those who do not. Hence, we recommend the Callaway Epic Flash Driver for low to mid handicap players. It will increase distance and improve accuracy. However, high handicap players should test the Callaway Epic Flash Driver out before buying as it could be too much club.
