In the Words of Wilson
‘The Launch Pad driver is designed to solve golf’s most frustrating problem – the dreaded slice off the tee’Wilson Golf
As you would expect from any product manufacturer, Wilson are keen to talk-up the quality of the Launch Pad Driver. In their own words, ‘Our Launch Pad driver features a super lightweight design, moderate hosel offset and Variable Face technology for high swing speeds, incredible distance, straighter drives and high launch angles with every swing.’
Every golfer would love to have high swing speeds, incredible distance, straighter drives and high launch angles every time they hit the ball off the tee, that goes without saying. Judging by the comments above, the Wilson Launch Pad is a one size fits all driver.
Wilson also claim, ‘The Launch Pad driver is designed to solve golf’s most frustrating problem – the dreaded slice off the tee’ and is their most forgiving face yet. This all sounds very exciting so let’s take a closer look.
How Does the Club Look?
The Wilson Launch Pad driver is grey on top of the head, with small grey and white trim around the back which can be seen at address. There is a simple alignment icon which is more than enough to aid a player when lining up a drive. The sole of the driver matches the top in the fact the design is quite simple but it does have a premium feel to it, which is nice.
The offset is very noticeable at address and will fill some players with confidence they’re not going to slice the ball but for others it may be off putting.
The Wilson Launch Pad driver is not a club which is going to be screaming ‘buy me!’ from the shelf but looks are not everything.
Beginning with the sound and when using the Wilson Launch Pad, you are left in no doubt that you have hit a drive. It is quite a loud, high-pitched sound and while this provides you with immediate feedback it also lets other players around you now who is on the tee. If you are a shy player and would rather other players were not looking up at you having played your shot, perhaps you better look elsewhere. If you crave the spotlight, you will enjoy using the Wilson Launch Pad driver.
When using this driver there is no doubt the Wilson Launch Pad promotes a draw bias. If you did not notice that the words ‘draw bias’ are printed on the foot of the driver you should have had your glasses on! It is definitely on the club and therefore the draw bias should not come as a surprise.
The offset hosel, as highlighted above, is combined with heel-side weighting and an upright lie angle to promote a draw. So, If you regularly slice the ball off the tee then the Wilson Launch Pad is worth trying as it actively draws the ball back towards the centre. Forgiveness has also proven to be very good when using his driver and even when striking the ball towards the heel of the face, distance does not fall below 10% of a good drive.
The Wilson Launch Pad driver has little trouble getting the ball into the air and for some players the ball flight maybe a little higher than desired. For some, it may be possible to lose distance on the short as the ball is travelling upwards rather than through the air. However, when striking the ball in the centre of the face it is possible to produce increased ball speed and greater distance when using the Wilson Launch Pad driver. It is a lightweight driver, so swinging the club should not be a problem for most players.
Who Is It For?
The Wilson Launch Pad driver can help a wide range of golfers off the tee. If you are struggling to correct a slice the draw bias will help to keep your drives straighter. If you need to hit the ball higher the increased launch will assist you and the forgiveness is there for players of every standard to enjoy.
Who is Using the Driver?
You will not find any professional PGA or European Tour players using the Wilson Launch Pad driver. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that means this is a disappointing driver because it is not. Using the same driver as Rory McIlroy is not going to make you play like him in the same way that wearing the same football boots as Lionel Messi is not going to make you the next biggest thing in football. You use the equipment that best matches your requirements.
The Wilson Launch Pad driver is suitable for any golfer who has a medium to slow swing speed, wants more forgiveness, is working against a slice or needs help getting the ball into the air. You do not need to be searching for all of these things to use the driver and it is especially useful for those who find their shots tend to drift right. There is no doubt the Wilson Launch Pad driver delivers on its promises and you cannot ask for more than that.
